SafetyWing Essential Review: Travel Medical Cover You Can Buy Mid-Trip
Essential is the SafetyWing plan built for people who need cover while they're already travelling. Here's what you get and what you don't.
Our view
Essential is a practical choice if you're already abroad and need emergency medical cover that renews without a return date. Its value is flexibility, not breadth. Read the exclusions, and look elsewhere if you need cover for a pre-existing condition or routine care.
How Essential works
- Type: travel medical insurance for unexpected illness and injury, with a US$250,000 overall maximum limit.
- Billing: Essential is billed like a subscription, in insurance periods of 5 to 364 days that can renew automatically.
- Buying abroad: if you're outside your home country when you buy, the start date defaults to the day of purchase, and cover begins once the proof-of-insurance email arrives. See buying SafetyWing while abroad.
- Age: Essential is sold from 14 days old through age 69.
- Home country: Essential covers eligible medical costs in your home country for up to 30 days in each three-month period (15 days if your home country is the US).
- United States: cover in the United States is an optional Essential add-on, and it isn't available to US citizens or residents.
- Add-ons: cover for adventure sports, and for electronics theft, is sold as an optional add-on.
Strengths for people already abroad
- Designed to be bought mid-trip, with cover that can start on the purchase date
- Periods renew automatically, so it can run without a fixed end date
- Some cover during visits home
- Published policy summaries you can read before buying
Limitations to weigh
- Essential generally excludes pre-existing illnesses and injuries. Limited emergency treatment may apply to certain sudden and unexpected pre-existing conditions when the policy's requirements are met, but this benefit isn't available during the first 28 days of the active insurance period.
- Routine and preventive care aren't what it's for.
- Essential is mainly pay-and-claim: you usually pay the provider, then claim the money back.
- Eligibility depends on your home country and where you are. SafetyWing follows US, UK, EU and UN sanctions, which restrict both who can buy (by home country) and where you're covered, and the country lists change over time.
See SafetyWing exclusions for the main things it won't pay for.
Who should consider it, and who shouldn't
Consider it
Healthy travellers and nomads abroad for weeks to open-ended, who want emergency cover now.
Consider Complete instead
You're settling abroad and want routine care. See Essential vs Complete.
Look elsewhere
You need cover for an existing condition, or SafetyWing can't sell to you. See alternatives.
The policy wording decides. What a plan actually covers is set by its policy documents, not by this page or by any sales page. Read the wording for anything that matters to you before you buy, and again before you rely on it.
Common questions
Is SafetyWing Essential health insurance?
No. It's travel medical insurance for unexpected illness and injury. For routine and ongoing care, look at Complete or other international health insurance.
Can I cancel Essential?
Yes. You can stop the subscription from your dashboard, and cover runs to the end of the current period. Whether unused time is refunded depends on whether you've claimed.
Does Essential have a deductible?
SafetyWing's documents have described a deductible in the past, and terms change. Check the current figure on SafetyWing's site before you buy. We don't quote it here because we couldn't confirm the current amount.
