Can You Buy SafetyWing When You're Already Abroad?

The most common SafetyWing question we see, answered from SafetyWing's own published material.

Short answer

Yes. Nomad Insurance can be bought before you leave home or at any point after your trip has started. If you're already outside your home country, Essential cover can start on the day you buy. Eligibility rules still apply, and problems that started before your cover are generally excluded.

How cover starts when you buy abroad

Your situationWhat SafetyWing describes
Already outside your home country (Essential)If you're outside your home country when you buy, the start date defaults to the day of purchase, and cover begins once the proof-of-insurance email arrives.
Choosing a later start date (Essential)A future start date begins at 00:00 UTC on that date.
Applying for CompleteComplete applications take up to 10 days to process, and approved cover starts on the 1st or the 15th of the month, whichever comes first.

Compare this with insurers that make you wait after buying abroad in our waiting periods guide.

Before you buy: check these

  • Where you can buy from, and where you're covered. SafetyWing follows US, UK, EU and UN sanctions, which restrict both who can buy (by home country) and where you're covered, and the country lists change over time.
  • Your age. Essential is sold from 14 days old through age 69.
  • The US. Cover in the United States is an optional Essential add-on, and it isn't available to US citizens or residents.
  • Visits home. Essential covers eligible medical costs in your home country for up to 30 days in each three-month period (15 days if your home country is the US).
  • Your health history. Essential generally excludes pre-existing illnesses and injuries. Limited emergency treatment may apply to certain sudden and unexpected pre-existing conditions when the policy's requirements are met, but this benefit isn't available during the first 28 days of the active insurance period.
  • Your plans. Cover for adventure sports, and for electronics theft, is sold as an optional add-on. Check the exclusions if you plan anything risky.

Buying it, step by step

  1. Choose Essential or Complete. If you need emergency cover soon, Essential is the plan that can start straight away. Compare them in Essential vs Complete.
  2. Enter your details accurately, including your home country and current location.
  3. Check the start date shown before you pay.
  4. Wait for the proof-of-insurance email. Save it, and the policy wording, offline.

Renewing without going home

Essential is billed like a subscription, in insurance periods of 5 to 364 days that can renew automatically. You can keep buying new periods until you turn 70. You can stop the subscription from your dashboard and cover runs to the end of the current period; unused time after the start date is refunded only if you haven't claimed.

The policy wording decides. What a plan actually covers is set by its policy documents, not by this page or by any sales page. Read the wording for anything that matters to you before you buy, and again before you rely on it.

Common questions

Is there a waiting period if I buy SafetyWing after departure?

SafetyWing's published material describes Essential cover starting on the purchase date by default when you're already outside your home country, once you receive the proof-of-insurance email. We didn't find a general post-departure waiting period for Essential, but the limited emergency benefit for sudden flare-ups of pre-existing conditions isn't available in the first 28 days of the active insurance period. Check the current policy wording. Complete has its own application and start-date rules.

Can I buy SafetyWing while I'm in my home country?

Yes, and you can set a future start date. Cover then begins at 00:00 UTC on the start date you choose.

Can I buy Complete while abroad?

Complete needs an application. Applications take up to 10 days and approved cover starts on the 1st or the 15th of the month. Check Complete's eligibility rules for your country of residence.

Will SafetyWing cover something that happened before I bought it?

Generally not. Problems that started before your cover generally count as pre-existing and are excluded. Essential's limited emergency benefit for sudden flare-ups of a pre-existing condition doesn't apply in the first 28 days of the active insurance period.
