Our view

SafetyWing is a sensible option to check if you're already abroad and need medical cover that renews, without a return date. It's designed to be bought mid-trip. It won't suit you if you need cover for a pre-existing condition, want comprehensive travel benefits, or need to buy from a country where it isn't sold.

What SafetyWing sells

SafetyWing's Nomad Insurance comes in two plans:

  • Essential is travel medical insurance for emergencies, with a US$250,000 overall maximum limit. Essential is billed like a subscription, in insurance periods of 5 to 364 days that can renew automatically. Essential review.
  • Complete is closer to international health insurance, with a US$1,500,000 annual maximum limit. Complete is a 12-month commitment. Complete review.

Why it suits people already abroad

  • It can be bought on the road. Nomad Insurance can be bought before you leave home or at any point after your trip has started.
  • Cover can start quickly. If you're outside your home country when you buy, the start date defaults to the day of purchase, and cover begins once the proof-of-insurance email arrives. See the details.
  • Suits open-ended trips. Periods renew automatically, and you can keep buying new periods until you turn 70.
  • Some home-country cover. Essential covers eligible medical costs in your home country for up to 30 days in each three-month period (15 days if your home country is the US).

Where it falls short

  • Pre-existing conditions. Essential generally excludes pre-existing illnesses and injuries. Limited emergency treatment may apply to certain sudden and unexpected pre-existing conditions when the policy's requirements are met, but this benefit isn't available during the first 28 days of the active insurance period.
  • Eligibility and location rules. SafetyWing follows US, UK, EU and UN sanctions, which restrict both who can buy (by home country) and where you're covered, and the country lists change over time.
  • US cover costs extra. Cover in the United States is an optional Essential add-on, and it isn't available to US citizens or residents.
  • Mostly pay first, claim later. Essential is mainly pay-and-claim: you usually pay the provider, then claim the money back.
  • Some activities need add-ons. Cover for adventure sports, and for electronics theft, is sold as an optional add-on. See exclusions and limits.
  • Complete is slower and a bigger commitment. Complete applications take up to 10 days to process, and approved cover starts on the 1st or the 15th of the month, whichever comes first.

Who it's likely to suit

Good fit

You're abroad without cover, healthy, travelling for weeks to open-ended, and want emergency medical cover that renews.

Check carefully

You plan adventure activities, will spend time in the US, or go home often.

Probably look elsewhere

You need cover for an existing condition, want strong cancellation cover for future bookings, or SafetyWing can't sell where you live or are. See alternatives.

Claims, briefly

Essential is mainly pay-and-claim: you usually pay the provider, then claim the money back, and claims must be filed within 60 days of the end of the insurance period. For a hospital admission, contact the insurer's assistance team as early as you can. That's when direct payment arrangements, if available, are most likely.

The bottom line

For the specific problem this site is about, getting medical cover after you've left home, SafetyWing Essential is one of the more straightforward options to check. It's flexible, renews without a return date, and is built to be bought abroad. Its limits are real, though. Read the exclusions, check your eligibility, and compare it with other options if your situation is unusual.

The policy wording decides. What a plan actually covers is set by its policy documents, not by this page or by any sales page. Read the wording for anything that matters to you before you buy, and again before you rely on it.

Common questions

Is SafetyWing legitimate insurance?

SafetyWing acts as a managing general agent: the insurance itself is underwritten by an insurer named in the policy documents, and the arrangement differs by product and country of residence. Check the underwriter named on your own certificate.

Can I buy SafetyWing if I've already left home?

Yes. Nomad Insurance can be bought after your trip has started, subject to eligibility rules. See buying SafetyWing while abroad.

Does SafetyWing cover pre-existing conditions?

Generally not. Essential excludes pre-existing illnesses and injuries; limited emergency treatment may apply to certain sudden, unexpected flare-ups if the policy's requirements are met, but not in the first 28 days of the active insurance period. Read the definitions in the policy wording before relying on it.

How much does SafetyWing cost?

It depends on your age, plan, and options such as US cover. Prices change, so we don't quote them. SafetyWing shows your price before you pay.
